Victragic's definitive VIC20 frogger clone for 16Kb machines. Ribbit!

Frogger '07

Frogger '07 for the 16K VIC20 is a brand new version of the arcade classic and is actually Victragic's first ever release on any system! Now that statement probably suggests that this game may lack a little polish and with the very high number of Frogger clones available for the machine you would be forgiven for having low expectations. Let me tell you, that would be wrong. Very wrong. This is the definitive version for the tiny Commodore machine.

I won't insult you by explaining how to play the game (suffice to say it's a bit like Tetris, but with more guns... ;) - JM), so I will instead tell you why it is my favourite 8-Bit version of an overdone formula.

Superb use is made of the required 16K expansion and the game has a delightful in-game tune. Spot effects are also included along with a winning and losing theme. Graphics too are of a high standard (for the VIC) and are instantly recognisable. It is the controls however that surprised me the most. They are so responsive and smooth that they feel extremely sweet and deaths are always your own fault (something that I don't think is true of the Xbox 360 Live Arcade version).

Surprisingly, '07 does not feel like a cut down version of Frogger; it feels much more like a true conversion and is appears to be quite faithful to its arcade daddy. If you want to truly understand how good this game is, load up one of the clones such as Hoppit, Hopper or Frog Chase and compare them to Victragic's debut. Let's hope he can now bring us some more quality releases for the unsung 8-Bit and that he is not a one hit wonder.
