Bubble Buster

Published in Home Computing Weekly #70

Suddenly, a bubble appears, you're trapped in a walled surround, armed only with a zig-zag ray. You fire. The ray moves slowly up the screen. The bubble is hit - but it divides into two smaller bubbles!

Each bubble splits in half three times before it bursts, so a lot of bubbles end up bouncing around. The bubbles move smoothly around the screen and squash nicely as they rebound. You die if a bubble bounces on you - and they can be very difficult to avoid, especially as the response to the keyboard is so slow. Using a joystick with ZX Interface II is just as poor.

The first three stages have an increasing number of bubbles, the fourth is a bonus stage, in which you are immune from the bubbles and have a limited time to score as many points as possible. After that, the cycle repeats with faster action.

Graphics are smooth if uninspired, the bubbles are all the same colour and sound is limited.

Bubble Buster is challenging at first, but I doubt it will hold interest for long because there's so little variety.
